I tolerate this century, but I don't enjoy it.

All of the ephemera that is far too trivial to be bothered with elsewhere on this site or, depending on your point of view, a meta-commentary on it. This ephemera includes, but is not limited to art, music and literature. Most of the content here will be discussed in terms that are as abstract as possible, reality being a singularly overrated concept.

One thing that has happened because of the Internet is that identity for some elites has become less trammelled by nationality, with people often identifying with acquaintances abroad more than those at home. One consequence of this is the rise of the movement to create new microstates, based on new models of politicail affiliation rejected by mainstream populations, such as Atlantium or The Free State Project (Am I alone in finding it odd for someone to attempt to destroy the nanny state through collectivist action that sounds reminiscent of a trades union? ). The old style commune, such as Christiania would seem to have acquired a new lease of life. That said, as an acquaintance of mine noted, the free state attempt to marry democracy and liberarianism seems flawed, especially when the whole goal of the project is to undermine democracy. Nor was democracy a particular concern for the US founders who feared tyranny of the majority. As Benjamin Franklin observed "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Thanks to Raven for drawing this to my attention.
